Correct wordpress folder permissions

If you have been caught out trying to update and ended up changing all your folder and file permissions here is a simple sum up of the correct default permissions and how to set them on a linux OS. ALL FILES should have permissions set to 644 ALL DIRECTORIES (folders) should have permissions set to 755 Update all the files recursively sudo find /path/to/wordpress/directory -type f -print0 | xargs -0 sudo chmod 644

Update all the folders recursively

sudo find /path/to/wordpress/directory -type d -print0 | xargs -0 sudo chmod 755

If you use a “group” to update or a user that is a member of a group rather than the owner you will need to add write permission to folders and files for the group as well:

find /path/to/wordpress/directory -type f -print0 | xargs -0 sudo chmod 664 find /path/to/wordpress/directory -type d -print0 | xargs -0 sudo chmod 775
